OpenAI

Also known as: OpenAI Inc

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research and deployment company, best known for ChatGPT and the GPT family of large language models. Its products and APIs are used both directly by consumers and as the underlying models inside many other tools. For marketers, OpenAI matters mainly because ChatGPT has become a common place where people ask questions that they once typed into a search engine.

What it is

OpenAI is the company behind ChatGPT, the GPT series of language models, image generation with DALL-E, and speech models such as Whisper. It sells access to its models through an API as well as through consumer and business versions of ChatGPT. Many third party applications, from writing assistants to customer support tools, are built on top of these models rather than on models the vendor trained itself.

Why it matters

ChatGPT is one of the largest sources of AI generated answers, so whether and how your brand appears in its responses affects awareness and consideration. Because so many other products call OpenAI models through the API, a single model family can shape answers across a wide spread of tools. Understanding what the models can retrieve, and what they only know from training, helps you judge where to invest effort.

How it works

Practitioners test prompts in ChatGPT that mirror real buying questions, then record which brands, sources and claims appear. They check whether ChatGPT's browsing and search behaviour is pulling live pages or answering from model memory, since the two need different fixes. Some teams also use the API to run the same prompts repeatedly at scale so they can track changes over time rather than relying on one off checks.

When it applies

This applies whenever your audience is likely to research problems, vendors or how to questions in ChatGPT, and whenever you are assessing tools that quietly run on OpenAI models.

Examples

  • A B2B software team runs twenty buying stage prompts in ChatGPT each month and logs which vendors are named in the answer.
  • A publisher reviews its robots and licensing position to decide how OpenAI crawlers may access its archive.
  • An agency uses the OpenAI API to repeat a set of category prompts fifty times and measure how often each client brand is mentioned.

How it is measured

  • Share of tested prompts where your brand is mentioned in a ChatGPT answer
  • Frequency of your domain being cited as a source in ChatGPT responses with browsing
  • Referral sessions from chatgpt.com in analytics
  • Accuracy rate of brand facts, pricing and positioning in generated answers
