Google

Also known as: Alphabet, Google LLC

Google is the search engine and technology company owned by Alphabet, and the operator of Search, YouTube, Chrome, Android, Google Ads and Google Cloud. It develops the Gemini family of AI models and surfaces generated answers in products such as AI Overviews. For most businesses it remains the largest single source of organic and paid search demand.

What it is

Google LLC is Alphabet's main operating company, covering search, advertising, video, mobile operating systems, cloud services and AI research through Google DeepMind. Its search index and ranking systems decide which pages appear for a query, and its advertising systems auction placements alongside those results. Gemini powers both its consumer assistant and generative features inside Search.

Why it matters

Google shapes how most discovery happens, so its ranking and interface changes directly affect traffic, leads and revenue. The shift towards AI generated summaries in results means some queries are answered without a click, which changes what organic visibility is worth and how it should be measured. Its documentation and guidelines also set de facto standards for structured data, page experience and content quality that other systems often follow.

How it works

Practitioners monitor rankings and clicks in Google Search Console, publish structured data so entities and products are understood, and maintain a Google Business Profile for local visibility. Paid teams manage campaigns in Google Ads, increasingly through automated bidding and asset based formats. Teams also track whether their pages are cited inside AI Overviews and Gemini responses, not just their classic blue link positions.

When it applies

It applies to almost any organisation that depends on search demand, and specifically when planning content, technical SEO, local presence or paid search budgets.

Examples

  • An ecommerce team adds product and review structured data so listings qualify for rich results in Google Search.
  • A SaaS company reviews Search Console impressions and clicks after an AI Overview begins appearing for a core how to query.
  • A multi site dental group maintains separate Google Business Profiles with correct hours, services and photos for each location.

How it is measured

  • Organic clicks and impressions by query cluster in Google Search Console
  • Average position and click through rate for priority terms
  • Share of tracked queries where the brand is cited in AI Overviews
  • Paid search cost per conversion and impression share in Google Ads
