ChatGPT Sponsored Agents: OpenAI Turns Ads Into Conversations

ChatGPT Sponsored Agents: OpenAI Turns Ads Into Conversations

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Sponsored Agents on 16 September 2026, alongside new AI tools in Ads Manager and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. A Sponsored Agent lets someone click an ad in ChatGPT and then start a clearly labelled conversation with a business-sponsored agent. Testing is limited to select advertisers in the United States.

The announcement sits in OpenAI's Reimagining advertising with AI post, filed under product releases. It covers four separate launches, and they are at very different stages of readiness. Read them separately, because the buying implications are not the same.

What are Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT?

A Sponsored Agent is a business-sponsored conversational agent that a ChatGPT user can choose to open after seeing a relevant ad. The user explains what matters to them, asks follow-up questions, then follows a link to the business's website when ready.

OpenAI uses a furniture example. Someone sees a dining table in an ad and wants to know whether it fits their space, how many people it seats, and how to care for the finish. Those questions used to be answered on a landing page. Now they can be answered before the click.

Two boundaries matter for anyone assessing brand risk. OpenAI states that the conversation with a Sponsored Agent is "distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the original conversation that the user started in ChatGPT". So the sponsored exchange is walled off from organic answers. OpenAI also says its ads principles remain unchanged.

What changed in Ads Manager and ChatGPT Work?

Three campaign management changes are rolling out now, not in test. They are the part of this launch you can act on.

  • Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT: advertisers can create, update and analyse campaigns using natural-language prompts. You can turn a website or a brief into a campaign, review performance, and get recommendations on the next step.
  • AI assistance inside Ads Manager: when drafting an ad, advertisers receive suggested copy and imagery based on their landing page and campaign objective. OpenAI is explicit that advertisers stay in control and can review and edit before adding anything to a campaign.
  • AI-powered text customization: an opt-in setting that adapts your existing headlines and descriptions to fit the context of a conversation, and automatically translates ad copy into the user's preferred language.

OpenAI also says ads can be created in ChatGPT Work by writing a few prompts. Taken together, this is a familiar pattern: the platform absorbs the production work, and the advertiser's remaining lever is the brief, the landing page and the objective.

Why the HubSpot and Shopify integrations are the real news

HubSpot is OpenAI's first CRM partner and Shopify its first ecommerce partner. That is a distribution decision, not a feature. It puts ChatGPT Ads inside the tools where mid-market marketing teams already sit.

From 16 September 2026, businesses managing customers in HubSpot can connect a ChatGPT Ads account in HubSpot, create ads, track performance and follow up on leads inside HubSpot, powered by their HubSpot context. US-based Shopify merchants can use the ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store, with products already connected through Shopify Catalog.

What the announcement does not tell you

OpenAI publishes no performance figures in this post. There is no cost data, no click or conversion benchmark, no engagement rate for Sponsored Agents, and no detail on how a sponsored conversation is attributed when the user later follows a link to your site.

That gap matters. My read is that the measurement question is the one to solve first, because a conversation that happens inside ChatGPT and ends in a website visit will land in your analytics as a referral with no visible middle. If you have already worked through what ChatGPT's user scale does and does not tell you, the same discipline applies here: adoption is not evidence of return.

There is a second open question on control. A Sponsored Agent answers unscripted questions about your product. OpenAI says the agent is business-sponsored and clearly labelled, but the post does not describe how advertisers constrain what it says. Anyone who has looked at OpenAI's hosted agent layer will recognise the trade-off: less build effort, less visibility into the loop.

The counter-view

The sceptical reading is reasonable. Sponsored Agents are a test with select US advertisers, and plenty of ad formats never leave test. The genuinely shipped items are creative automation and two integrations, which is closer to catch-up with existing ad platforms than to a new channel.

What to do this week to get ready for ChatGPT Sponsored Agents

  1. If you run a US Shopify store, install the ChatGPT Ads app and check your Shopify Catalog data is accurate, since products feed the ads directly.
  2. If you use HubSpot, connect a ChatGPT Ads account and decide which lifecycle stage sponsored leads enter.
  3. Audit the landing pages you would advertise, because AI creative suggestions are generated from them.
  4. Decide your position on AI-powered text customization before enabling it, and record who signs off on adapted headlines.
  5. Write the ten questions a buyer asks before purchase. That list is your Sponsored Agent brief when access opens.

Businesses that want to be in the queue when ChatGPT Sponsored Agents widen beyond the current US test can sign up at ads.openai.com.
