Conversational advertising

Also known as: chat advertising, ads in chat assistants, conversational ads

Conversational advertising is paid placement inside a dialogue, whether that is an AI assistant, a chatbot, a messaging app or a voice interface. Instead of a static creative next to content, the ad appears as a response, suggestion or handover at the point where the user has expressed intent. The defining features are turn-by-turn context, a disclosure label, and the option for the user to keep talking rather than click away.

What it is

It covers a spread of formats: sponsored results in AI chat answers, promoted replies in messaging platforms, brand agents offered inside an assistant, and paid placements in customer service chat flows. What unites them is that targeting is driven by what the person has just said rather than a stored keyword list alone. The user can respond, refine and object, which makes the unit interactive rather than broadcast.

Why it matters

A growing share of research and comparison happens inside assistants and messaging, and those surfaces carry no traditional ad slots, so brands need a format that works in dialogue. Intent is unusually explicit in conversation, which can make targeting sharper than interest-based display. It also changes the creative job from writing an ad to designing a useful exchange.

How it works

Platforms match the conversation to advertiser intent signals, insert a clearly labelled sponsored response or offer, and either link out or hand the task to a brand-owned agent. Advertisers supply structured product, pricing and availability data, write guardrails for what the assistant may claim, and set up tracking for conversations that continue off-platform. Teams usually start with a narrow set of high-intent queries and expand once disclosure, tone and compliance are settled.

When it applies

Applies when a meaningful part of your audience researches or buys through assistants and messaging, and you have product data clean enough to support an automated exchange. It is premature where the platform offers no labelled inventory in your market or category.

Examples

  • A travel brand pays for a labelled sponsored suggestion when users ask an assistant for ski resorts with childcare.
  • A retailer runs promoted replies in a messaging app so people asking about returns are offered an exchange flow.
  • A B2B software vendor sponsors a comparison-stage placement in an AI assistant and routes qualified conversations to a demo booking agent.

How it is measured

  • Share of sponsored conversations that progress beyond the first reply
  • Cost per qualified conversation, defined by your own lead or basket criteria
  • Conversion rate and average order value from conversational placements versus paid search
  • Complaint, opt-out or negative sentiment rate on sponsored replies, as a brand safety check
