SynthID

Also known as: Google SynthID, SynthID watermarking

SynthID is a watermarking technology from Google DeepMind that embeds an imperceptible signal into AI-generated images, audio, video and text so the content can later be identified as machine-made. The watermark is designed to survive common edits such as cropping, compression or light colour changes. Google applies it to output from its own generative models and provides tooling to detect it.

What it is

SynthID adds a statistical pattern to generated media that a human cannot see or hear but a matching detector can read. For text, the signal is applied to the token selection process as a language model generates words, so the watermark lives in the wording itself rather than in file metadata. Google has applied it across its generative products and released a text watermarking implementation for open use.

Why it matters

Provenance is becoming part of how platforms, publishers and buyers judge content. If AI systems, ad networks or marketplaces begin filtering or labelling machine-generated material, the ability to detect a watermark shapes what gets surfaced and trusted. For marketers it matters mainly as a governance and disclosure question rather than a ranking factor.

How it works

Teams generating assets with Google models can expect SynthID to be present in the output, and can use Google's detection tooling to check whether a file or passage carries the watermark. Practitioners pair this with other provenance methods, such as C2PA content credentials and internal asset logs, because a single watermark only covers content from models that apply it. Heavy paraphrasing, translation or re-rendering can weaken a text watermark, so it is treated as one signal among several.

When it applies

It applies when you produce or receive media from Google generative models, when disclosure or provenance rules are in play, and when you need to check whether supplied creative or copy is machine-generated.

Examples

  • A brand team checks a stock-style image supplied by an agency and finds it carries a SynthID watermark, so they log it as AI-generated in the asset library.
  • A publisher builds a pre-publication step that runs contributor submissions through provenance checks before editorial review.
  • A marketing lead documents which image and video tools apply watermarks, so legal can answer client questions about AI disclosure.

How it is measured

  • Share of published assets with recorded provenance status
  • Number of submissions flagged as AI-generated at review stage
  • Coverage of AI disclosure fields across the asset management system
  • Time taken to verify provenance of a supplied asset
