SerpApi
Also known as: SERP API
SerpApi is a commercial API service that returns search engine results as structured JSON, so developers can query engines programmatically without building and maintaining their own scrapers. It handles the mechanics of fetching and parsing results, including proxies, location parameters and page rendering. Search teams use it to power rank trackers, SERP feature monitoring and AI answer tracking.
What it is
Rather than parsing raw HTML yourself, you send a request with parameters such as query, location, device and language, and receive parsed fields for organic results, ads, local packs, knowledge panels and other elements the engine returned. It supports results from several engines and search verticals. Responses are designed to be dropped straight into a database, dashboard or script.
Why it matters
Reliable SERP data is hard to collect at scale because layouts change, blocking is common and results vary by location and device. Using a maintained API shifts that maintenance burden away from your team, which matters when you are monitoring hundreds or thousands of queries. For AI search work it is a practical way to capture how results and AI-generated answers differ across markets and over time.
How it works
Teams typically call the API on a schedule from a script or workflow tool, store the responses, then build their own reporting on top rather than relying on a vendor dashboard. Common patterns include tracking positions for a keyword set, logging which SERP features appear, and extracting the sources cited in AI answers. Requests are usually metered, so practitioners batch queries and cache responses to control cost.
When it applies
Consider it when you need SERP or AI answer data in your own systems, at a volume or specificity that off-the-shelf tools do not cover, and you would rather not run scraping infrastructure yourself.
Examples
- An in-house team builds a custom rank tracker that pulls positions for 2,000 keywords across five countries each week.
- An analyst logs whether an AI overview appears for a query set and records which domains it cites.
- A marketplace monitors local pack composition for service queries in 30 cities to inform where to open next.
How it is measured
- Number of API searches consumed per month against plan limits
- Request success rate and average response latency
- Coverage of tracked queries returned with complete, parsed fields
- Cost per tracked keyword per month, including retries and reruns

- AI content detectionAI content detection is the use of software to estimate whether a piece of text, image, audio or video was generated by an AI model. Detectors return a probability or classification rather than proof, and accuracy varies with length, language, editing and model used. Because of that uncertainty, results are treated as a signal for review, not a verdict.
- AI watermarkingAI watermarking is the practice of embedding a signal into AI generated text, images, audio or video so the output can later be identified as machine produced. The signal is usually designed to be imperceptible to people but detectable by software that holds the matching key or detector. It is one of several provenance approaches used alongside metadata standards and content credentials.
- Bot detectionBot detection is the practice of identifying automated traffic to a website or API and separating it from human visitors. It distinguishes wanted automation, such as search engine and AI crawlers, from unwanted activity like scraping, credential stuffing and click fraud. Detection results feed decisions about what to allow, challenge, rate limit or block.
- Brave BrowserBrave is a Chromium based web browser from Brave Software that blocks third party trackers and most ads by default. It bundles privacy controls, Brave Search as the default engine, and an AI assistant called Leo. Because it strips tracking scripts, visits from Brave users are often harder to attribute in analytics.
- Brave SearchBrave Search is a search engine from Brave Software that serves results from its own web index rather than reselling another engine's results. It is the default engine in the Brave browser, offers AI generated answer summaries, and is sold to developers as the Brave Search API. That API makes it a grounding source for other search and AI products.
