Reddit

Also known as: reddit.com

Reddit is a community discussion platform organised into subreddits, where members post links and text, comment, and vote content up or down. Its threads rank well in traditional search and are frequently used as source material by AI answer engines, which makes it a significant discovery surface. Brands use it for research, monitoring and careful participation rather than conventional advertising alone.

What it is

Reddit is made up of thousands of topic based communities, each with its own moderators and rules, covering everything from broad interests to narrow product categories. Content visibility is driven by votes, comment activity and recency inside each community. Reddit also sells advertising and offers its own in platform search and AI answer features.

Why it matters

People increasingly add site queries or the word reddit to searches when they want first hand opinion rather than marketing copy, and search engines and AI assistants often surface those threads in response. That means a single high ranking thread can shape how your brand is described in an AI answer or a comparison list. Reddit is also one of the most direct sources of unfiltered language about problems, alternatives and objections in your category.

How it works

Practitioners monitor brand, competitor and category mentions in relevant subreddits, then use the vocabulary they find to shape content and product messaging. Participation works best from accounts with real history, following each subreddit's rules on self promotion, disclosing affiliation and answering questions rather than pitching. Paid options include promoted posts and conversation targeting, and some teams run AMAs or sponsor community threads where moderators allow it.

When it applies

It applies in categories where people seek peer opinion before buying, such as software, finance, health, hobbies, travel and consumer electronics. It is also relevant whenever AI search answers about your brand appear to draw on forum discussion.

Examples

  • A SaaS team finds a thread comparing them with two rivals, joins as a named employee to correct a pricing error and links to the docs page.
  • A marketer pulls recurring complaints from a niche subreddit and turns them into a comparison page and FAQ using the same phrasing.
  • A brand tracks which Reddit threads are cited in AI Overviews for its category and prioritises answering the questions raised in them.

How it is measured

  • Volume and sentiment of brand mentions across relevant subreddits over time
  • Reddit threads appearing in the top results or AI citations for your priority queries
  • Referral sessions and conversions from reddit.com in analytics
  • Engagement on your own comments and posts, including upvote ratio and reply volume
