Personalisation
Also known as: personalised experiences
Personalisation is the practice of adapting content, offers, recommendations or messaging to a specific person or segment based on data you hold about them. It ranges from simple rules, such as showing a country specific price, to model driven recommendations. The aim is to make the experience more relevant to the individual than a single default version would be.
What it is
Personalisation changes what a user sees based on signals such as location, device, referral source, past behaviour, account status or declared preferences. It can be applied on websites, in apps, in email and in ad creative. Segment level personalisation groups similar users together, while one to one personalisation targets individual behaviour.
Why it matters
Relevance usually improves conversion, retention and revenue per visitor, because fewer users have to work to find what applies to them. It also matters for discovery, since assistants and AI answer engines increasingly resolve a user's context themselves, which raises expectations of what a brand experience should do. Poorly executed personalisation, though, can hide important content, confuse crawlers or feel intrusive.
How it works
Teams define segments and the decision logic, connect a data source such as a CDP or CRM, then deliver variants through a personalisation engine, CMS rules or an email platform. Changes are validated with A/B or holdout testing so the lift is measured rather than assumed. For search visibility, practitioners keep a stable, crawlable default version of each page and personalise secondary elements rather than core indexable content.
When it applies
It applies when you have enough reliable data about visitors or customers, and enough traffic, to make variant experiences worth building and measuring. It is most valuable on high intent pages, in logged in product experiences and in lifecycle email.
Examples
- An ecommerce homepage promotes a different category banner to returning visitors based on the last category they browsed.
- A B2B site shows industry specific case studies to visitors from named target accounts identified by firmographic data.
- An email platform sends a restock reminder only to subscribers who previously viewed the out of stock item.
How it is measured
- Conversion rate of personalised variant versus control or holdout group
- Revenue or pipeline per session by segment
- Engagement with personalised modules, such as click through rate on recommended items
- Coverage rate, meaning the share of sessions that are eligible for a personalised experience
Related terms in Marketing Strategy
- Agentic marketingAgentic marketing is the use of AI agents that can plan multi-step work and take actions across marketing tools, rather than only generating text on request. It also covers designing marketing for a world where buyers delegate research and purchasing to their own agents. In practice it is a mix of workflow automation, tool permissions and human review.
- AI searchAI search is the use of large language models to answer a query directly, usually with a written summary rather than a list of links. It covers AI overviews inside traditional search engines and assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini. The visible outcome for a brand is being described and cited inside an answer rather than ranked on a results page.
- AI-generated contentAI-generated content is text, images, audio, video or code produced wholly or mainly by a generative model rather than written or made by a person. It ranges from fully automated output to drafts that a human edits and approves. Its value in marketing depends on editorial control, accuracy and whether it adds anything a reader cannot get elsewhere.
- Audience intelligenceAudience intelligence is the practice of gathering and analysing data about who your audience is, what they care about, and how they search and buy, then turning that into decisions. It combines first party behavioural data with research, search data, social listening, and customer conversations. The output is usually segments, messaging guidance, and content priorities rather than a single report.
- B2B marketingB2B marketing is the practice of promoting products and services to other organisations rather than to individual consumers. It typically involves longer sales cycles, multiple decision makers, higher contract values and a heavier reliance on content, sales enablement and relationships. Success is usually measured through pipeline and revenue contribution rather than immediate transactions.
- Brand voiceBrand voice is the consistent personality and language a brand uses across every channel, covering vocabulary, tone, sentence rhythm and the things it will and will not say. It is documented in guidelines so different writers, agencies and AI tools produce work that sounds like the same organisation. Voice stays stable while tone flexes with context.
