No-code

Also known as: no-code development, no-code platforms, low-code/no-code

No-code describes tools that let people build software, workflows and websites through visual interfaces and configuration instead of writing code. Low-code sits alongside it, allowing optional scripting for cases the visual builder cannot handle. The category covers site builders, automation platforms, internal tool builders, form and database products, and increasingly AI agent builders.

What it is

No-code platforms expose components such as pages, forms, tables, triggers and actions that users assemble by dragging, connecting and configuring. The platform handles hosting, storage and execution. Low-code variants add custom expressions, scripts or API calls for edge cases.

Why it matters

Marketing teams use these tools to ship landing pages, campaign automations, lead routing and reporting without waiting on an engineering backlog, which compresses test cycles. The trade-off is discovery risk: builders differ in how they render pages, handle structured data, generate URLs and control crawl access, so SEO and AI search visibility can suffer if the tool is chosen badly. Governance also matters, since data flows built outside IT can create security and consent problems.

How it works

Practitioners map the process first, pick a tool that matches the integration and export needs, then build, test and document the workflow. For anything public facing, check server-rendered HTML, canonical tags, schema support, page speed and analytics before launch. Set ownership and review dates so automations do not quietly break after the person who built them moves on.

When it applies

It applies when the requirement is well understood, volumes are moderate and speed matters more than bespoke behaviour, or when prototyping before committing to custom development.

Examples

  • A campaign landing page built in a site builder and connected to the CRM through a webhook.
  • An automation that sends new demo requests to Slack, creates a CRM record and starts a follow-up email sequence.
  • An internal tool built over a spreadsheet so the sales team can update product availability without a developer.

How it is measured

  • Time from request to live for marketing builds
  • Proportion of campaign assets shipped without engineering involvement
  • Crawlability and Core Web Vitals scores for no-code built pages
  • Workflow failure rate and mean time to fix broken automations
