Multimodal AI

Also known as: multimodal, multimodality, multimodal models

Multimodal AI refers to models and systems that can work with more than one type of input or output, such as text, images, audio and video. A multimodal model can, for example, read a screenshot and answer questions about it, or transcribe speech and summarise it. This contrasts with text-only models that only accept and produce written language.

What it is

Multimodal systems represent different data types in a shared numerical space so the model can reason across them in one pass. In practice that means an assistant can accept a photo, a chart, a voice note or a document scan alongside a written question. Outputs may also be multimodal, including generated images, speech or video, depending on the product.

Why it matters

People increasingly search by pointing a camera, speaking a question or uploading a screenshot, so discovery is no longer only about typed keywords. If your product images, diagrams, video and audio are poor quality or unlabelled, multimodal systems have less to work with when deciding what to show or cite. It also widens the surfaces where a brand can appear, from visual lookups in shopping to voice answers in cars and on phones.

How it works

Teams use multimodal models to caption and tag image libraries, extract data from invoices and PDFs, transcribe and summarise calls, and check that screenshots match written documentation. On the content side, practitioners improve alt text, file names, captions and transcripts, keep product photography clear and consistent, and add readable labels to charts so the meaning survives when a model reads the image. Testing usually means running real photos, recordings and screenshots through the assistant and checking whether the answer is right.

When it applies

It applies to visual and voice search, image and video heavy categories such as retail, travel, property and recipes, and any workflow where source material arrives as pictures, scans or recordings rather than clean text.

Examples

  • A shopper photographs a pair of boots and an assistant identifies the style and suggests similar products from retailers whose images and product data are clear.
  • A finance team uploads scanned supplier invoices and a model extracts totals, dates and reference numbers into a spreadsheet.
  • A marketing team adds full transcripts and chapter headings to its webinar videos so assistants can summarise and cite the content accurately.

How it is measured

  • Share of assets with accurate alt text, captions or transcripts
  • Accuracy rate on a test set of real images, scans or audio clips
  • Traffic and conversions from visual and voice entry points, where reporting allows
  • Volume of image, audio or video inputs handled per month and their error or fallback rate
