Google Sheets
Also known as: Sheets, Google Spreadsheets
Google Sheets is the cloud spreadsheet in Google Workspace, used for storing, calculating and sharing tabular data in a browser. It supports real time collaboration, formulas, pivot tables, charts, add-ons and scripting. Search and content teams use it as the default workspace for keyword research, crawl data, reporting and tracking.
What it is
Google Sheets is a browser based spreadsheet that saves to Google Drive and allows several people to edit the same file at once. It includes standard spreadsheet functions plus web specific ones such as IMPORTRANGE, IMPORTXML and GOOGLEFINANCE. Add-ons, Apps Script and connections to BigQuery extend it beyond manual data entry.
Why it matters
Most discovery and search work produces messy exports from several tools, and Sheets is where those exports are joined, cleaned and turned into something a team can act on. It is cheap, shareable and familiar, so stakeholders can read a report without needing a licence for a specialist platform. Sheets also acts as the staging area for content inventories, redirect maps and page level tracking during site changes.
How it works
Practitioners export keyword, crawl or analytics data to CSV, load it into Sheets, then use lookups, filters and pivot tables to group pages, match queries to URLs or spot gaps. Scheduled Apps Script functions or connectors refresh data automatically so dashboards stay current. Sheets is also connected to Looker Studio as a data source, or to BigQuery through Connected Sheets for larger datasets.
When it applies
Use it when data needs to be combined, reviewed or shared by people with different tools and skill levels, and when the dataset is small enough to handle outside a database.
Examples
- A content inventory sheet listing every URL with its primary query, word count, last updated date and owner, used to plan a refresh programme.
- A redirect map built before a site migration, mapping old URLs to new ones with a status column for QA sign-off.
- A weekly Sheet refreshed by Apps Script that pulls Search Console query data so the team can track which pages gain or lose impressions.
How it is measured
- Data freshness, measured by the last successful refresh time on automated sheets
- Script or connector error rate on scheduled imports
- Share of recurring reports delivered from a single source sheet rather than ad hoc exports
- Time taken to produce a standard report compared with the manual baseline

- AI content detectionAI content detection is the use of software to estimate whether a piece of text, image, audio or video was generated by an AI model. Detectors return a probability or classification rather than proof, and accuracy varies with length, language, editing and model used. Because of that uncertainty, results are treated as a signal for review, not a verdict.
- AI watermarkingAI watermarking is the practice of embedding a signal into AI generated text, images, audio or video so the output can later be identified as machine produced. The signal is usually designed to be imperceptible to people but detectable by software that holds the matching key or detector. It is one of several provenance approaches used alongside metadata standards and content credentials.
- Bot detectionBot detection is the practice of identifying automated traffic to a website or API and separating it from human visitors. It distinguishes wanted automation, such as search engine and AI crawlers, from unwanted activity like scraping, credential stuffing and click fraud. Detection results feed decisions about what to allow, challenge, rate limit or block.

- Brave SearchBrave Search is a search engine from Brave Software that serves results from its own web index rather than reselling another engine's results. It is the default engine in the Brave browser, offers AI generated answer summaries, and is sold to developers as the Brave Search API.
