AI Search Metric
AI visibility
Also known as: AI Search visibility, visibility in AI answers
AI visibility is how often and how prominently a brand, product or website appears in answers generated by AI assistants and AI search features. It is measured by mentions, citations and the quality of the description, not by keyword rankings. It is the AI search equivalent of share of voice on a results page.
What it is
AI visibility is a measured position rather than a single number you can look up. It is built from repeated tests: a defined prompt set, run across chosen assistants, scored for whether the brand is named, whether its site is cited, and how it is characterised. Because answers vary between runs and between users, visibility is expressed as a rate across many samples.
Why it matters
If AI answers absorb the click, presence inside the answer becomes the main route to awareness for a growing share of research queries. Visibility also determines the story buyers hear first, since an assistant will summarise your positioning from whichever sources it found. Tracking it gives a leading indicator of demand shifts that traffic reports alone will miss.
How it works
Practitioners define a prompt set that mirrors real buyer language, run it on a fixed schedule, and store the full answers so wording changes can be reviewed. Scores are usually broken down by assistant, by funnel stage and by competitor, so gaps are actionable. Improvement work then focuses on the sources those answers already draw on, plus first party pages that answer the questions plainly.
When it applies
Use it whenever AI assistants are part of your audience's research path, and as a standing metric alongside organic rankings rather than a replacement for them.
Examples
- A marketing team reports monthly that the brand appears in 42 of 80 tracked prompts, up from 31.
- A category leader notices it is named in awareness prompts but absent from pricing prompts, and publishes a transparent pricing page.
- A challenger brand tracks that a competitor is cited three times more often on ChatGPT and targets the review sites behind those citations.
How it is measured
- Mention rate across the tracked prompt set, by assistant
- Citation share of your domain versus named competitors
- Average position of first brand mention within the answer
- Sentiment and factual accuracy scores of brand descriptions

Related terms in AI Search Metric
- AI-referred trafficSessions referred from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and other LLM surfaces. Often under-counted in standard analytics because referrers are stripped or labelled as direct.
- Answer attribution rateThe proportion of AI answers that explicitly link back to source pages versus those that summarise without attribution. Attribution rate varies materially by platform and query type.
- Bounce-back rate (AI surface)The rate at which users return to the SERP or refine the prompt after seeing an AI Overview. Google's internal signal that an Overview failed, high bounce-back is associated with Overviews being silently removed for that query cluster.
- Brand mention rateThe frequency at which an LLM mentions a brand by name in answers across a prompt set, with or without citation. Brand mentions without citation are an early indicator of model-internalised brand awareness.
- Citation depthHow early in an AI-generated answer a source is cited. Earlier citations correlate with higher click-through from AI surfaces and stronger user trust signals.
- Citation diversity indexThe number of distinct domains an LLM cites across a prompt set, normalised by prompt count. Falling diversity in a category signals consolidation, and a closing window for new entrants.
