What it is

Citation depth measures how early in an AI-generated answer a source is cited, for example whether it appears in the opening claim or only in a closing aside. It treats position within the answer as a quality signal, not just presence.

Why it matters

Earlier citations correlate with higher click-through from AI surfaces and stronger user trust, because the first sources an answer leans on carry the most perceived authority.

How it works

Practitioners record the ordinal position of each citation within an answer and average it across the prompt set, then improve depth by making content the most direct, quotable answer to the core question.

When it applies

Watch it once you already have citations and want to convert presence into clicks and authority.
