Google Previews 'Ask Advisor'. Who Owns Ad Strategy Now?

Google Previews 'Ask Advisor'. Who Owns Ad Strategy Now?

Google Ads has previewed Ask Advisor, an AI assistant that pulls context from across platforms to shape your ad creative and campaign strategy. It was announced on 10 August 2026 and is billed as coming soon. In my opinion this is less a feature and more a quiet change in who actually owns strategy inside your account.

What Google actually announced

The pitch is blunt: making campaign decisions without the full picture is the problem, and Ask Advisor is the answer. The assistant takes the right context from across platforms to power creative and strategy, according to the announcement from Google Ads on X.

You can read the product detail on the official Ask Advisor page. Note the framing carefully. This is not a reporting tool. It is an advisory agent that sees the cross-channel picture you used to assemble by hand.

Why this matters more than it looks

For years the value of a good media buyer was synthesis. You pulled signals from search, shopping, video, analytics and creative performance, then formed a view. Ask Advisor moves that synthesis inside the platform.

From my observation, that reframes the job. You stop being the person who assembles context and become the person who governs it. The strategist role does not vanish, but it shifts from doing the join to owning the inputs and checking the output.

Your first-party data becomes the fuel

An advisor is only as good as what it can see. If your account is thin on first-party signals and clean conversion data, the AI advises blindly. If it is rich, the AI advises well.

This is the same logic playing out across the wider agentic shift. As I covered when ChatGPT moved from asking to doing, the agents that win are the ones fed structured, trustworthy signals. Ad platforms are no different.

How to prepare so it advises well, not blindly

Do not wait for the launch. The teams that benefit will have their house in order first. Here is the concrete sequence I would run.

  1. Fix your conversion measurement. If your primary conversion actions are inconsistent or duplicated, the advisor optimises toward noise. Audit them now.
  2. Consolidate first-party data. Get consented customer lists, offline conversions and value signals flowing in. This is the context that separates a useful advisor from a generic one.
  3. Clean your account structure. Tidy campaign naming, asset groups and audience signals so the agent reads intent clearly rather than guessing.
  4. Instrument your reporting for AI-influenced decisions. Know which changes came from the advisor. I think this becomes a real governance question, similar to what I raised on who owns your data story when systems start writing it.
  5. Set human review gates. Decide upfront which advisor suggestions auto-apply and which need sign-off.

The honest takeaway

This could be the moment campaign management becomes campaign delegation. The advisor sees the whole board, so your edge stops being synthesis and starts being the quality of what you feed it and the judgement you apply to what it returns.

Concrete action: before Ask Advisor lands, audit your conversion tracking and first-party data feeds this quarter. Whoever owns the inputs still owns the strategy.
