Ecommerce and Project Management in ChatGPT: The Two Categories Vendors Already Own
Ecommerce platforms took 83.8% of ChatGPT's citations and project management 87.5% – second and third highest of the ten categories tested, behind accounting at 90.9%. Both are transparent-pricing, consolidated markets where the model simply reads the vendors' own pages. Shopify holds a mean rank of 1.50 and Asana 1.60, two of the four strongest positions in the study. If you compete here, your AI visibility is almost entirely a function of your own site, and there is very little third-party surface to fight over.
The two categories side by side
| Measure | Ecommerce platforms | Project management | Corpus average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean results read per answer | 40.8 | 55.2 | 44.7 |
| Mean citations per answer | 6.2 | 5.3 | 6.1 |
| Distinct cited domains (6 prompts) | 11 | 8 | – |
| Distinct brands surfaced | 14 | 14 | – |
| Vendor-owned citation share | 83.8% | 87.5% | 65.9% |
| Citation concentration (HHI) | 2,213 | 2,070 | – |
| Most-named brand | Shopify | Asana | – |
| Shortlist stability (Jaccard) | 0.355 | 0.336 | 0.338 |
| Distinct leaders across 6 prompts | 4 | 3 | 3.8 |
Project management has the narrowest citation surface in the entire study: eight distinct cited domains across six prompts. Ecommerce is close behind at eleven, tied with accounting for the highest citation concentration at an HHI of 2,213.
For context, healthcare EHR had 19 cited domains and an HHI of 796. These two categories are the structural opposite.
Project management reads heavily and cites narrowly
Project management drew the second-heaviest retrieval of any category at 55.2 results per answer, behind only healthcare EHR at 60.5. Yet it produced the second-fewest citations of any category at 5.3, behind HR and payroll at 5.0, and drew on the fewest domains at eight.
That combination – heavy retrieval, narrow citation – is worth understanding. The category is genuinely contested at the level of content: there is an enormous volume of "best project management software" material, listicles, comparison posts and roundups. The model reads a lot of it. Then it discards almost all of it and cites the vendors, because the vendors publish clear per-user pricing with named tiers and the third-party content largely restates it.
That is the retrieval funnel at its most brutal: 55.2 results read, 5.3 shown, a survival rate under 10%.
Which brands the model already believes in
| Brand | Category | Answers naming it | Times ranked #1 | Mean rank | Total mentions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Ecommerce | 6 | 3 | 1.50 | 80 |
| BigCommerce | Ecommerce | 6 | 1 | 2.33 | 52 |
| Asana | Project management | 5 | 4 | 1.60 | 44 |
| ClickUp | Project management | 5 | 1 | 2.80 | 28 |
| Monday.com | Project management | 5 | 0 | 2.80 | 29 |
Shopify appeared in all six ecommerce prompts, led three of them, and generated 80 total mentions – the second-highest raw mention count in the study behind HubSpot's 109. Its mean rank of 1.50 is the second strongest overall, behind only Clio at 1.20. shopify.com earned 15 citations across five answers, the second most-cited domain in the corpus.
Asana is the equivalent in project management: five answers, four top finishes, mean rank 1.60. asana.com earned 9 citations across four answers.
ClickUp and Monday.com are an instructive pair. Both appeared in five answers with identical mean ranks of 2.80. clickup.com earned 9 citations across three answers, monday.com 6 across three. ClickUp took one top slot; Monday.com took none. Two brands with near-identical presence and materially different outcomes at the top of the list.
BigCommerce is the ecommerce equivalent: full presence across all six prompts, one top finish, mean rank 2.33. Notably, both bigcommerce.com (6 citations across three answers) and bigcommerce.co.uk (5 across two) were cited, meaning its localised domains are being retrieved independently – a detail worth noting for any vendor running country-specific sites.
Why these categories favour vendors so heavily
Three things line up.
Pricing is public and simple. Per-user-per-month for project management, tiered monthly plans plus transaction rates for ecommerce. Named tiers, published rates, clear inclusions. Citations bind to checkable claims, and these are the most checkable claims in software.
The brand set is consolidated. Fourteen brands each across six prompts, with three or four distinct leaders. There is no long fragmented tail for the model to work through.
The vendors publish extensive structured product content. Feature matrices, app and integration directories, template galleries, plan comparison tables. All of it extractable, all of it citable.
Compare that to the gated enterprise categories – ERP at 52.5%, healthcare EHR at 48.7%, legal at 54.1% – and the pattern across the whole study holds: where a category publishes its prices, the vendors own the citation surface.
What this means if you compete here
There is almost no third-party surface to win. At 83.8% and 87.5% vendor share, with eight to eleven cited domains, publisher outreach has very little addressable ground. Corpus-wide, G2, Capterra, Software Advice, TrustRadius and TechnologyAdvice supplied 4.1% of all citations; in these categories the third-party slice is thinner still.
So the entire game is your own pages. Pricing, plan comparison, feature availability, app and integration directories, template libraries, supported-platform tables. Extractable, tabular, dated, and not rendered client-side into a form.
Localised domains are retrieved separately. BigCommerce's UK domain earned citations independently of its .com. If you run country sites, they are separate citation assets and need the same structural treatment. It also means a weak localised site can under-represent you in geographically-framed questions.
Rank, not presence, is the metric. ClickUp and Monday.com have identical presence and identical mean rank, and only one of them has ever led an answer. Shopify and BigCommerce both appeared in all six ecommerce prompts and are 0.83 places apart in mean rank. Presence-based reporting shows all four brands as fully visible, which tells you nothing.
Expect low headroom and defend accordingly. In consolidated, transparent categories the model's ranking is stable and entity-driven. Content structure protects your citation share; it will not displace an incumbent at the top. Asana's four top finishes out of five and Shopify's three out of six are entity positions built over years.
FAQ
Which ecommerce platform does ChatGPT recommend?
Shopify, most often. It appeared in all six ecommerce prompts, led three of them and holds a mean rank of 1.50 with 80 total mentions - the second-highest mention count of any brand in the study. BigCommerce also appeared in all six with one top finish and a mean rank of 2.33.
What project management software does ChatGPT recommend?
Asana leads. It appeared in five of six prompts, took the top slot in four and holds a mean rank of 1.60. ClickUp and Monday.com both appeared in five answers with identical mean ranks of 2.80, though only ClickUp ever led.
Why do ecommerce and project management vendors dominate AI citations?
Public pricing and consolidated brand sets. Both categories publish named tiers with clear rates, and both have around fourteen brands with three to four distinct leaders. Vendors took 83.8% and 87.5% of citations respectively, against a 65.9% corpus average.
How narrow is ChatGPT's citation surface for project management?
The narrowest of any category tested: eight distinct cited domains across six prompts, with a citation Herfindahl-Hirschman index of 2,070. The category also drew the second-heaviest retrieval at 55.2 results per answer, meaning most of what is read is discarded.
Do country-specific domains get cited separately by ChatGPT?
Yes. In this corpus both bigcommerce.com and bigcommerce.co.uk earned citations independently, across three and two answers respectively. Localised domains are separate citation assets and need the same structured pricing and product content as the primary site.
