Performance Max theming
Also known as: PMax theming, campaign themes, PMax themes
Performance Max theming is the practice of dividing a Performance Max campaign into coherent themes, usually one asset group per theme, so creative, products and landing pages align. Themes are commonly built around product category, margin, audience intent or brand versus non-brand. The aim is clearer reporting and more relevant ads inside a largely automated campaign.
What it is
Theming is a structural discipline rather than a Google feature name. It covers how you group products and creative into asset groups, how you use search themes as signals, and how you separate campaigns so budgets and targets are not averaged across unlike offers. It is the paid media equivalent of tidy information architecture.
Why it matters
Performance Max optimises towards a single goal across a broad mix, so mixing unrelated products or intents lets strong performers mask weak ones and pushes budget in directions you cannot see. Clean themes give you readable data, sensible bid targets per group, and messages that match what the person is likely looking for. They also make creative production manageable, since each theme has a defined brief.
How it works
Practitioners start from how the business actually differs: category, price band, margin, seasonality, or stage of intent. They then build an asset group per theme with matched listing groups, feed labels and landing pages, set target ROAS or CPA per campaign where economics differ, and use search themes plus the search category report to refine. Over time low volume themes get merged and high volume ones get split further.
When it applies
It applies when a Performance Max account covers more than one meaningful offer, and becomes essential once spend is high enough that averaged targets hide real differences in profitability.
Examples
- An ecommerce account uses custom feed labels to create high margin, standard and clearance themes, each with its own target ROAS.
- A multi-service trades business runs separate themes for emergency repairs and planned installations, with urgency-led copy in one and comparison-led copy in the other.
- A retailer splits a broad campaign into seasonal and evergreen themes so summer budget shifts do not distort year-round lines.
How it is measured
- Cost per conversion and ROAS spread between themes, and whether the gap narrows after restructuring
- Share of total spend by theme against contribution to profit
- Search category report coverage, showing which themes capture which query clusters
- Conversion rate by theme and landing page pairing

- AI-generated creativeAI-generated creative is ad and marketing creative produced or adapted using generative models, including images, video, voiceover, headlines and body copy. Teams use it to produce more variants, localise faster and test concepts that would be too costly to shoot. It still needs human direction, brand review and legal checks before it runs.
- Asset groupsAn asset group is the creative container inside a Google Performance Max or Demand Gen campaign, holding headlines, descriptions, images, logos, videos and audience signals. Google assembles ads from these assets and serves them across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Retail campaigns can tie an asset group to a specific set of products through listing groups.
- Brand safetyBrand safety is the practice of preventing advertising and brand content from appearing next to material that could damage reputation, such as violent, illegal or misleading content. Brand suitability is the related, narrower idea of matching placements to a specific brand's tolerance and values rather than a universal baseline. Both rely on exclusion lists, content classification and verification reporting.
- ChatGPT AdsChatGPT Ads refers to advertising placements inside OpenAI's ChatGPT. OpenAI has publicly signalled that advertising is part of its commercial plans and has been testing and building out ad capabilities, so the format details continue to change. For marketers it represents a possible new paid surface alongside organic visibility in AI assistants.
- ChatGPT Sponsored AgentsChatGPT Sponsored Agents is the name given to a paid placement format in which a brand's agent or assistant can be surfaced inside a ChatGPT conversation to help complete a task, such as booking, quoting or buying. It sits alongside other advertising formats OpenAI has discussed for ChatGPT, where commercial results are marked as sponsored rather than blended invisibly into answers. Availability, naming and mechanics are still moving, so treat any specification as provisional and check current OpenAI documentation before planning spend.
- Conversational advertisingConversational advertising is paid placement inside a dialogue, whether that is an AI assistant, a chatbot, a messaging app or a voice interface. Instead of a static creative next to content, the ad appears as a response, suggestion or handover at the point where the user has expressed intent. The defining features are turn-by-turn context, a disclosure label, and the option for the user to keep talking rather than click away.
