Facebook Marketplace

Also known as: Meta Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is Meta's classifieds section inside Facebook, where people and businesses list items for sale to buyers nearby or further afield. Listings are browsed by category, location and search, and buyers usually contact sellers through Messenger. It is used heavily for second-hand goods, vehicles, property rentals and local services.

What it is

Facebook Marketplace is a buying and selling surface built into the Facebook app and website. Individuals can list items free of charge, and businesses can list inventory in supported categories, with some regions and categories supporting checkout or partner integrations. Discovery happens through category browsing, keyword search and a location radius set by the buyer.

Why it matters

Marketplace is a high-intent shopping surface that sits outside traditional search engines, so demand captured there never touches your website or your organic rankings. For local and resale businesses it can be a primary source of enquiries at very low cost. It also shapes price expectations, because buyers often check Marketplace comparables before contacting a shop or dealer.

How it works

Sellers create listings with clear titles, honest condition notes, a price, a location and multiple photos, then respond quickly to Messenger enquiries. Practitioners treat listing titles and descriptions like search copy, using the words buyers actually type, and they refresh or relist stock that goes stale. Some businesses use Marketplace to test pricing and demand before committing to wider advertising.

When it applies

It applies to physical goods, vehicles, rentals and local services where buyers expect to deal with a nearby seller. It is less relevant for digital products, regulated categories that Meta restricts, and premium brands that need tight control of presentation and price.

Examples

  • A used furniture shop lists daily stock arrivals with location tags and handles collection booking over Messenger.
  • A car dealer publishes its forecourt inventory on Marketplace and routes enquiries to the sales team's shared inbox.
  • A letting agent lists available flats on Marketplace to reach renters who never visit property portals.

How it is measured

  • Listing views and saves per item
  • Messenger enquiries per listing and reply time
  • Enquiry to sale conversion rate by category
  • Average days to sell and final price versus asking price
