Customer data platform
Also known as: CDP
A customer data platform (CDP) is software that collects customer data from websites, apps, and back office systems, joins it into a persistent profile for each person, and makes those profiles available to other tools. Unlike a warehouse alone, a CDP is built for marketing and product teams to define audiences and activate them. It sits between data collection and the channels where campaigns and experiences run.
What it is
A CDP ingests behavioural events, transactional records, and known attributes such as email address or account ID, then resolves them to a single profile using identity rules. It stores those profiles so they persist between sessions and across devices. Most CDPs also include audience building, consent handling, and connectors that push segments to advertising, email, support, and personalisation tools.
Why it matters
Discovery and marketing decisions get better when you can see the whole journey rather than a single channel. A CDP lets you suppress existing customers from acquisition spend, trigger lifecycle messages from real behaviour, and measure which sources bring people who actually convert and stay. It also gives you one place to apply consent and deletion requests rather than chasing every downstream tool.
How it works
Teams instrument events through SDKs, server side APIs, or warehouse syncs, agree a tracking plan so event names and properties stay consistent, then configure identity resolution to stitch anonymous and known activity. Audiences are defined with rules or SQL and sent to destinations on a schedule or in near real time. Many organisations run a composable setup where the warehouse is the store of record and the CDP handles activation.
When it applies
It applies when customer data is spread across several systems and marketing, product, or service teams need shared audiences rather than channel specific lists. It is usually overkill for a single site with one email tool and no repeat purchase behaviour.
Examples
- A retailer suppresses customers who bought in the last 30 days from paid social prospecting audiences, using a segment synced from the CDP.
- A SaaS firm joins product usage events with CRM opportunity data so sales sees which trial accounts hit an activation milestone.
- A publisher builds a 'read three AI articles this week' audience and sends it to its email tool to trigger a newsletter recommendation.
How it is measured
- Identity resolution rate, meaning the share of events tied to a known profile rather than an anonymous ID
- Percentage of profiles with a verified email or account identifier
- Time from audience definition to activation in a downstream tool
- Tracking plan conformance, meaning the share of incoming events matching the agreed schema

- AI content detectionAI content detection is the use of software to estimate whether a piece of text, image, audio or video was generated by an AI model. Detectors return a probability or classification rather than proof, and accuracy varies with length, language, editing and model used. Because of that uncertainty, results are treated as a signal for review, not a verdict.
- AI watermarkingAI watermarking is the practice of embedding a signal into AI generated text, images, audio or video so the output can later be identified as machine produced. The signal is usually designed to be imperceptible to people but detectable by software that holds the matching key or detector. It is one of several provenance approaches used alongside metadata standards and content credentials.
- Bot detectionBot detection is the practice of identifying automated traffic to a website or API and separating it from human visitors. It distinguishes wanted automation, such as search engine and AI crawlers, from unwanted activity like scraping, credential stuffing and click fraud. Detection results feed decisions about what to allow, challenge, rate limit or block.

- Brave SearchBrave Search is a search engine from Brave Software that serves results from its own web index rather than reselling another engine's results. It is the default engine in the Brave browser, offers AI generated answer summaries, and is sold to developers as the Brave Search API. That API makes it a grounding source for other search and AI products.
