Circle to Search
Also known as: Android Circle to Search
Circle to Search is an Android feature that lets people search whatever is on their screen by circling, highlighting or tapping it, without leaving the app they are in. It sends the selected content, image or text, to Google as a query and shows results in an overlay. It was introduced on selected Android devices in 2024.
What it is
The feature is triggered by a long press on the home button or navigation bar, then a gesture around the item of interest. Google interprets the selection, which may be a product in a video, a phrase in a message or an object in a photo, and returns search results in a panel over the current app. Users can add typed words to refine the query.
Why it matters
It shortens the distance between seeing something and searching for it, so discovery increasingly happens inside social feeds, messaging apps and video rather than on a search results page. Brands that appear in user generated content, reviews or video can pick up demand they did not create directly. It also means product recognition and clear naming matter beyond your own website, because the query originates from someone else's content.
How it works
Selections are handled in much the same way as other visual and text queries, drawing on Google's index, Shopping data and AI generated summaries where they appear. Practitioners cannot optimise the feature itself, so the work is indirect: ensure products are recognisable in third party imagery, keep shopping feeds and product pages accurate, make model names and distinctive design details easy to identify, and encourage creators to show products clearly. Testing involves using the gesture on your own social and video content to see what results appear.
When it applies
It applies to Android users on supported devices, and is most relevant for categories discovered through social video, screenshots and in app browsing, such as fashion, beauty, homeware, electronics and travel.
Examples
- A viewer circles a jacket in a short video and sees shopping results for similar items.
- Someone highlights an unfamiliar phrase in a work chat and gets a definition without switching apps.
- A user circles a hotel pool in a friend's holiday photo and finds the property and booking options.
How it is measured
- Android share of organic mobile sessions and how it trends
- Branded and model number search volume following creator or influencer activity
- Visibility checks: whether your product is returned when the gesture is used on your own social content
- Shopping feed coverage and accuracy for the products most often shown in third party media
