AI Overviews
Also known as: AIO, SGE
Google's generative answer shown at the top of the SERP for eligible queries. Sourced from the open web, cites multiple pages, and increasingly replaces the traditional snippet for informational intent. Successor to the SGE experiment.
What it is
AI Overviews is Google's generative answer block rendered above the classical results for eligible queries. It synthesises information from multiple open-web pages and cites them inline, increasingly displacing the traditional featured snippet for informational intent.
Why it matters
For informational queries it captures the first impression and a large share of attention, so being cited is often the difference between visibility and being buried below the fold.
How it works
Google selects passages it can extract and attribute confidently, so earning presence depends on clear, self-contained passages, strong topical authority, and structured, factual content that maps to the query's sub-questions.
When it applies
It applies to informational and exploratory queries where Google judges a synthesised answer to be more useful than a single ranked link.
Examples
- A how-to query returns a step list assembled from three different tutorials, each cited beside the steps it informed.
- A comparison query produces a synthesised summary with citations to a review site, a manufacturer page, and a forum thread.
- A definitional query surfaces a concise explanation attributed to an authoritative reference page.
How it is measured
- Citation frequency: share of target queries where your domain is cited in the overview.
- Citation position within the overview (which passages and how prominently you are attributed).
- Click-through from the overview citation to your page.
- Share of voice against competing cited domains for a query cluster.
