Google Surface
Android
Also known as: Google Android, Android OS
Android is Google's mobile operating system, used on phones, tablets, televisions and other devices from many manufacturers. For marketers it is a discovery surface as well as a platform, because it ships with Chrome, the Google app, Google Play and Google's assistant features. Being visible on Android means being findable through those entry points, not only through a browser.
What it is
Android is an operating system developed by Google and distributed in both open source form and as a licensed version with Google Mobile Services. Device makers ship it with varying skins and default apps, but Google's search, Chrome and Play Store are common on branded Android devices. Android is also where many mobile app experiences and notifications live.
Why it matters
A large share of mobile search and app usage happens on Android devices, so Android behaviour shapes mobile rankings, page experience requirements and app discovery. Entry points such as the Google app, Discover, the search widget and assistant style features generate visits that never start on a desktop browser. Mobile performance and layout issues on Android hardware therefore affect both conversion and search visibility.
How it works
Practitioners test sites on real Android devices and network conditions, prioritise mobile page performance, and make sure structured data and mobile markup are correct. App teams optimise Play Store listings, use app indexing and deep links so search results can open app content, and coordinate push notifications with other lifecycle channels. Analytics is usually segmented by operating system to separate Android behaviour from iOS.
When it applies
It applies whenever mobile is a significant share of your traffic or revenue, and specifically when you publish an Android app or rely on Google surfaces for mobile discovery.
Examples
- A news publisher checks that article pages load quickly on mid range Android phones and appear correctly in Discover in the Google app.
- A retailer sets up deep links so a Google search result for a product opens the relevant screen in its Android app.
- A subscription service compares trial conversion between Android and iOS traffic and finds a checkout layout problem specific to smaller Android screens.
How it is measured
- Share of sessions, conversions and revenue from Android devices
- Core Web Vitals and load time measured on Android field data
- Play Store listing metrics such as impressions, store listing conversion rate and installs
- Deep link open rate and retention of users acquired through Android search results
