CRM and Marketing Automation in ChatGPT: HubSpot Owns the Category, and the Citations

CRM and Marketing Automation in ChatGPT: HubSpot Owns the Category, and the Citations

HubSpot is the single most dominant brand in this entire study. It appeared in eleven of sixty answers – more than any other vendor – took the top slot six times, holds a mean rank of 1.91 and generated 109 total mentions. Its own domain, hubspot.com, earned 18 citations across seven answers, making it the most-cited domain in the whole corpus. CRM is also the most stable category tested, with a shortlist overlap of 0.529 against a 0.338 average. Marketing automation, by contrast, is one of the least stable at 0.216. Same vendor, two very different competitive positions.

The two categories look near-identical on citation structure – 60.0% and 60.5% vendor share, HHIs within six points of each other, marketing automation drawing the highest citation count of any category at 7.2 per answer. Where they diverge completely is brand consolidation.

CRM surfaced nine distinct brands across six prompts, with only two distinct leaders. It is the most settled category in the study.

Marketing automation surfaced twenty-two distinct brands – the highest count of any category – across five distinct leaders. Its shortlist overlap of 0.216 is second-lowest, ahead only of HR and payroll.

HubSpot leads both, but it holds CRM 67% of the time and marketing automation only 33%.

Why CRM is the most consolidated category

Three reinforcing factors.

The brand set is small and well-established. Nine brands across six differently-shaped questions. Compare that to nineteen in HR and healthcare, twenty-two in marketing automation.

Pricing is public. Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho and Monday all publish per-user rates with named tiers. That is why CRM vendors take 60.0% of citations and why the head-to-head archetype in this category resolves so cleanly – head-to-head prompts corpus-wide took 91.0% of citations from the two named vendors' own sites.

The head-to-head question is well-formed. "Salesforce vs HubSpot" is a genuinely canonical comparison that both vendors and every comparison site publishes against. That produces stable retrieval and stable answers.

Which CRM and martech brands the model already believes in

BrandAnswers naming itTimes ranked #1Mean rankTotal mentions
HubSpot1161.91109
Salesforce521.8057
Zoho CRM503.6029
Pipedrive504.8026
Monday.com502.8029

HubSpot's position is worth reading carefully. Eleven answers is breadth no other brand approaches – it appears across both CRM and marketing automation prompts and spills into adjacent categories. 109 mentions is the highest raw count in the study. Six top finishes is the highest.

But its mean rank of 1.91 is worse than Salesforce's 1.80, and worse than Clio's 1.20, Shopify's 1.50 and Asana's 1.60. HubSpot wins on presence and frequency, not on the strength of the model's conviction when it does appear.

Zoho CRM, Pipedrive and Monday.com all appeared in five answers each with zero top finishes. Pipedrive's mean rank of 4.80 is among the weakest in the corpus – consistently present, consistently mid-list.

At domain level, hubspot.com took 18 citations across seven answers, salesforce.com 9 across six, monday.com 6 across three and zoho.com 12 across five.

What this means if you sell CRM or marketing automation software

In CRM, your problem is displacement, not discovery. With nine brands, two leaders and 0.529 stability, the shortlist is settled. Content structure will win you citations; it will not move you past HubSpot in rank, because rank in this category is an entity-salience position built over a decade. 69.3% of brand recommendations corpus-wide carry no citation at all, and CRM's stability suggests a high share of its ranking is decided before retrieval starts.

In marketing automation, the shortlist is genuinely open. Twenty-two brands, five leaders, 0.216 overlap and the highest citation count per answer of any category at 7.2. That is a category where retrieval is doing real work and where a challenger with the right pages can enter shortlists. Prioritise it over CRM if you play in both.

Own the head-to-head pages. Head-to-head prompts take 91.0% of citations from the two named vendors' own sites. If a buyer asks "Salesforce vs HubSpot", the evidence base for that answer is those two domains. A vendor without a strong, current, tabular "us vs them" page has handed that surface to the competitor who has one.

Keep pricing extractable. Both categories sit at 60% vendor citation share on the back of published per-user pricing. Named tiers, per-user rates, seat minimums, what each tier includes, and contact-limit or record-limit thresholds – all citable, all frequently buried in a pricing calculator that renders in JavaScript and contains no extractable text.

Marketing automation buyers ask category-landscape questions. With twenty-two brands surfacing, this category behaves like the category-landscape archetype, which names 10.9 brands per answer and takes only 41.7% of citations from vendors. That means third-party listings matter more here than in CRM. Being present on the comparison-site long tail – 43 sites taking 14.4% of all citations corpus-wide – is a live route in.

How stable is ChatGPT's CRM shortlist?

How can a challenger CRM get into ChatGPT shortlists?

Through the alternatives-to and category-landscape archetypes rather than head-to-head. Alternatives-to prompts name a mean of 7.8 brands and category-landscape prompts 10.9, against 2.1 for head-to-head. Publish extractable pricing and a current, tabular comparison page against the category leader.
