LLM Platform
Vertex AI
Also known as: Google Vertex AI, Google Cloud Vertex AI
Vertex AI is Google Cloud's managed platform for building, tuning and deploying machine learning and generative AI applications. It provides access to Gemini and other models, tooling for retrieval, grounding, evaluation and agents, and the infrastructure to run them in production. Teams use it when they need programmatic control and cloud governance rather than a consumer chat interface.
What it is
Vertex AI brings model access, data pipelines, fine-tuning, vector search, prompt management, evaluation and deployment into one Google Cloud product. Its model garden includes Google's own models alongside third-party and open models. Agent and retrieval components let developers ground model output in their own indexed content.
Why it matters
Much of the AI-assisted search experience people encounter is built rather than bought, and Vertex AI is one of the main places that building happens. For search and growth teams, it is where site search, support assistants and content generation pipelines are assembled, so decisions made there shape how a brand's own information is retrieved and presented. Understanding it helps marketers brief engineering work realistically.
How it works
Practitioners index content into a vector store or use the managed search and RAG components, then call a model through the API with retrieved context and a system prompt. Evaluation tooling compares prompt or model variants against test sets, and deployed endpoints are monitored for latency, cost and quality. Access, data residency and logging are handled through standard Google Cloud controls.
When it applies
It applies when you are building custom AI features, internal tools or grounded search experiences on Google Cloud and need repeatable deployment, monitoring and cost control.
Examples
- An ecommerce team indexes product data in Vertex AI Search to power natural language product discovery on site.
- A publisher uses grounding with Google Search to reduce fabricated details in AI-assisted article summaries.
- A SaaS company fine-tunes a smaller model on support transcripts to classify incoming tickets before routing.
How it is measured
- Answer groundedness or citation accuracy on a held-out evaluation set
- Retrieval precision and recall for the indexed corpus
- Cost per thousand requests and token spend by application
- Endpoint latency and error rate in production

- Amazon BedrockAmazon Bedrock is a managed AWS service that gives developers API access to foundation models from several providers, including Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, Cohere, AI21 Labs, Stability AI and Amazon's own models. It handles hosting, scaling and access control, so teams can call models without running their own inference infrastructure. It also bundles supporting features such as retrieval over your own documents, agents, guardrails and model evaluation.
- Answer engineAn answer engine is a search product that responds to a question with a direct, synthesised answer rather than a ranked list of links. It reads and summarises sources, usually citing some of them, and supports follow-up questions in the same session. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews all behave as answer engines.
- ChatGPTOpenAI's consumer assistant, the largest LLM surface by user count. Citation patterns shift materially with major model releases (e.g. GPT-5.5 in May 2026), and persistent memory now carries brand affinity across sessions.
- ClaudeAnthropic's assistant. Strong on long-context analysis, tool use, and structured citation. Increasingly cited inside enterprise workflows where source attribution and reasoning quality matter.
- CopilotMicrosoft's assistant, integrated across Bing, Windows, Office, and Edge. Pulls from the open web with Bing's index; visibility in Copilot is correlated with Bing ranking signals more tightly than other LLMs.
- GeminiGoogle's flagship assistant, integrated across Workspace, Android, and Search (AI Overviews and AI Mode use Gemini-family models). Brands optimising for Gemini reach are simultaneously optimising for AI Overviews.
