AI Crawler

Grokbot

Also known as: grok bot, xAI crawler

Grokbot is the web crawler associated with xAI, the company behind the Grok assistant. It requests pages from public websites so that content can be used in xAI's products and model training. Site owners see it in server logs and can allow or restrict it through robots.txt and edge rules.

What it is

Grokbot is an automated agent that fetches web pages on behalf of xAI, in the same way that Googlebot fetches pages for Google Search. It is identified by its user agent string in server logs, and requests may also be checked against published IP ranges where a vendor provides them. It sits alongside other AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in most log analyses.

Why it matters

Whether an AI crawler can reach your pages influences whether your brand, products and expertise can appear in AI generated answers that draw on web content. Blocking it reduces exposure in those surfaces, while allowing it means your content may be summarised or quoted without a click. Knowing which bots visit also helps you separate genuine human demand from automated traffic in analytics and capacity planning.

How it works

Practitioners filter server or CDN logs by user agent to see which URLs Grokbot requests, how often and what status codes it receives. Access is then managed with robots.txt directives, firewall or edge rules, and rate limiting if crawl volume becomes a load problem. Because user agent strings and documented behaviour change over time, teams verify the current string and any published IP list rather than relying on older blog posts.

When it applies

It applies whenever you are auditing AI crawler access, setting a content licensing or blocking policy, or investigating unexplained non-human traffic in logs.

Examples

  • A publisher reviews 30 days of CDN logs and finds Grokbot requesting archive pages far more often than new articles, then adjusts internal linking and sitemaps.
  • An ecommerce team allows Grokbot on product and guide pages but blocks faceted search URLs to cut wasted crawl.
  • A B2B SaaS company decides to allow AI crawlers across its documentation, and records the decision in a written crawler policy reviewed each quarter.

How it is measured

  • Grokbot requests per day and share of total bot traffic
  • Status code mix for Grokbot requests, especially 404 and 5xx rates
  • Coverage: share of priority URLs that Grokbot has requested in the last 30 days
  • Referral sessions and branded search movement after an allow or block change
